Reverse Logistics of Pharmaceuticals In Europe - A Regulatory Approach

Moniveena MG1 & Pramod Kumar T M1

Introduction: The quality of medicines, is directly associated with health of society. So it is very essential to effectively recall the medicines which have quality issues or loss of effectiveness from the supply chain. Reverse logistics of Pharmaceutical products include collecting and recycling of drugs sent back to the manufacturers to ensure an environmentally safe method of recovery. European Pharmaceutical supply chains are characterized by the high level of wastage and spill over and also face the common issues of returns and recall of drugs. An inefficient reverse process may lead to customer dissatisfaction, environmental pollution, water pollution and divert the drugs into black market where expired drugs will be diluted and labelled as saleable. A detailed information regarding the implementation and efficiency of collection schemes for unused pharmaceuticals throughout Europe is highly scattered and deficient. Regulators play a major role in this matter. Regulators should consider how they can begin working together with the public and private sector to develop a clear vision of global standards and how they will streamline the recall process. Although each country has their own regulatory framework and system, the vision of developing a global standard and internationally harmonised system could help manufacturers to effectively recall the product and to dispose them properly.
