Delivering Antimicrobial Drugs to Lungs Through Inhalation: An Overview

Introduction: Pulmonary infections are one of the most common disorders affecting inpatient and outpatient clinical care. Each year these infections account for more than one-quarter of all the deaths worldwide. These vary from acute infections, like pneumonia, aspergillosis and bronchitis, to chronic conditions, like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cystic fibrosis (CF).The infections are primarily caused by a variety of microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, viruses, etc. residing deep inside the airways. The treatment regimen includes the usage of diverse antimicrobials, depending upon the cause and severity of the infection underlying.
