Abhishek Dadhich*1 & Nirmal Gurbani2

Introduction: Access to essential medicines is a fundamental element towards the right to health for every individual. For any effective health care system, the availability of cost-effective medicines is considered as the most important component. In today’s time, to promote health and saving lives of people is highly dependent on the pharmaceutical medicines which are used for curing, diagnosing and preventing many diseases and medical symptoms. In developing countries, a large number of the population who have poor access to medicines, also suffer with irrational use of medicines. WHO demarcated, essential medicines are the medicines that “satisfy the priority health-care needs of the population.” This also ensures that Essential medicines are available at all healthcare facilities in adequate quantity, in suitable dosage forms, assured quality and cost-effective price that an individual patient or community or country can bear. Expenditure on healthcare is the second most common cause for rural indebtedness and this can be managed by essential medicine list model which is limited in number and their availability will promote a better supply chain management and rational prescribing in remote and far flung healthcare facilities. This concept not only provides better procurement system but also enables proper quantification with easier storage.
