A Systematic Review on Rose Hip: Phytochemicals and Therapeutic Investigation

Introduction: Rose hip, a summer fruit, commonly known as dog rose, belonging to the Rosaceae family is being used traditionally and pharmacologically. The fruit is consumed in the forms of marmalades, nectar, wine, tea, pulp or drinks.The rich composition of bioactive compounds makes rose hip an important source of food and medicine. The bio active ingredients present in the rose hip such as phenolic acid, vitamin C, flavonoids provides the pharmacological actions like antioxidant action, anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, anti-diabetic, anti-hyperlipidemic, skin protective activity and gastroprotective activities. Rose hip marmalades exhibit higher levels of antioxidants and phenolic contents. Rose hips were initially used as dog fodder and now it is gaining its importance in cosmetics, food preparation and pharmacology.
