Pharmacoepidemiology for Quality Use of Medicines

Introduction: The diverse and beneficiary effect of the use of pharmacoepidemiology is to find risk verses benefit analysis of medicines. It also helps in explaining their added cost aspects with that of the benefits. The issues currently being faced is to establish the medicine related facts based on data with low sample size and lack of generalizability. Pharmacoepidemiology offers the better results in cost effective manner to supplement the facts developed in pre-marketing phases.
The difference between the actual trends of the medicine utilization and need, can be termed as the gap analysis, which can be better managed with use of the strategic decisions by Pharmaceutical Industry as well as by policy makers. The difference between the top prevailing diseases with respect to the top selling medicines in the world can be bridged by adapting the right indicators for pharmaceutical policies by industry and policy makers for the benefit of population. The future aspects of the subject are based upon the use of different statistical methods for analysing medicines for their risk and benefit. Utilizing available secondary data can also indicate emerging growth area for future direction of the pharmaceutical industry.
