Rituparna Chaki Ghosh, Nilanjan Ghosh & Subhash C Mandal*

Introduction: Drugs derived from plant sources have been used in treatment of human ailments from times immemorial. Recent developments in the field of phytotherapy have led to the identification and isolation of medicinally active phytoconstituents that can be utilized for ameliorating diseases specifically. However, not many of such identified phytodrugs have been commercially developed to fit consumer use. Several physicochemical factors relating to their solubility in physiological media, instability under physiological and formulation conditions and permeation across cellular membranes have been the major setbacks to their successful formulation into dosage forms. These physicochemical properties have also resulted in decreased bioavailability of the herbal constituents leading to limiting their potential in exhibiting their desired pharmacological action. Hence, although there is a vast number of explored phytodrugs to be used as acceptable remedies, there is lack of their practical usage. A thorough investigation of their formulation aspects is therefore the need of the hour to maximize their use in disease treatment. The present article gives an insight into the formulation challenges of certain plant derived drugs which have been identified to have potential benefits in the management of several diseases.
