Why Thalassaemia is A Growing Concern in Our Country?

Introduction: Thalassaemia is a genetic blood disorder characterized by unusual production of haemoglobin in the body. The defect results in insufficient oxygen transport i.e severe anaemia due to abnormal haemoglobin production. The disorder has a severe impact on the body including excessive iron, bone deformities, enlarged spleen, slow growth rate for children and in certain cases also lead to heart disorders. The disorder has no cure and people living with thalassaemia require regular blood transfusions to maintain a routine lifestyle.
