Renal Stone Disease: A Serious Health Concern

Introduction: Renal stone disease is the most common chronic disease of the urinary tract affecting about 10% of the global population. It is considered one of the most common medical problems in the present society as it affects a high percentage of people and this illness exists since historic times. In the last 15 years, the incidence of renal stones was increased approximately by a 50%. Renal stone disease affects up to 15% of men and 6% of women. The renal stone formation is a recurrent problem. The recurrence rate without preventive treatment is approximately 10% at 1 year, 33% at 5 years and 50% at 10 years. Renal stones are of different types, the most common being the calcium oxalate stones. There are various factors that attribute towards stone formation hereditary, epidemiological, dietary, non-dietary, geographical, infective, genetic etc. This review further discusses the types of renal stones, risk factors, pathogenesis of renal stones, and various modifiers of renal stone formation.
