Introduction: Cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide as well as in Bangladesh. Increasing threats of cancer are huge burden in Bangladesh. Present study is aimed to provide information about cancer types and its treatment plans among the different hospitals in Dhaka city. This survey study was done at Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital from 21th April, 2014 to 21th May, 2014, by using a standard questionnaire. Of total 528 cancer patients, 40.6% were from Dhaka division, 64.6% were male, and majorities were from 50-59 years age group. The most frequent cancers were respiratory tract (29.4%) followed by gastro intestinal track (20.3%), breast (11.8%), and female genital organ (10.4%) cancers, which were similar to ICD-O 3rd edition. In adult male, lung cancer ranked top (21.7%) followed by stomach cancer (15.2%) and colorectal cancer (10.0%). Breast cancer (19.3%), cervical cancer (15%) and ovarian cancer (13.9%) were top three malignancies in female patients. Study revealed that 42.61% patients were illiterate and 84.84% had no idea about cancer. 54.9% of male patients involved in smoking and 64.7% female patients took betel nut or tobacco leaf. Majority of cancer patients (201, 38.1%) took chemotherapy for their cancer treatment while 70.1% cancer patients were satisfied about their cancer treatment. We suggest that initiation of population-based screening is for early detection of cancer and primary and secondary prevention strategies are for reducing the prevalence of tobacco consumption while breast self-examination is for females in addition to increasing overall awareness against cancer in Bangladesh.
