Anticancer Drugs from Marine Ecosystem

Raman Sehgal, Charu Sharma, M Nandave and S K Ojha

Abstract: The marine ecosystem is a rich and prolific source of potential anticancer agents. There is a continuous increment in marine derived chemicals, which are in the later stages of drug development as anticancer agents. After showing promising results in various cell lines, these are now being studied clinically in cancer patients. However, because of limited amount of biomass, the sustainable production of drug to meet the requirements of the market still remains a major problem. These agents offer a unique mechanism of action with complex structural features. Some of these appear to be safe in regard to dose limiting toxicity, myelosuppression common with conventional anticancer drugs. The present article focuses on the anticancer potential of marine derived natural products, which have shown promising results in various phases of drug development.
